Arizona Night Sky: Touching the Stars

Arizona Night Sky: Touching the Stars

By Roger Naylor

Darkness doesn’t just fall in the Arizona desert, it swoons. Nighttime feels like a full-blown collapse as the final wisps of sunset color drain from the sky and the last flicker of light flees over distant horizons.

Night transforms the desert and nowhere is that more apparent than at Castle Hot Springs. The Arizona night sky found here is from a different era, before great glowing cities gnawed away at it. This is the sky of the Old West, of campfires and coyote song. It remains as dark and rich and uninterrupted as when Castle Hot Springs first opened in 1896. This is the kind of night sky that turns everyone into an amateur astronomer.

Tucked away in the Sonoran Desert, down a quiet dirt road, Castle Hot Springs is removed from the city. The reclusive location keeps the resort connected to the natural world. That setting allows guests to experience each daily cycle to the fullest. Every sunrise and sunset are unimpeded by lights and traffic and clustered buildings. They are pure and vivid, quite often, astonishing.

Then at night, guests have the opportunity to savor some of the best stargazing in Arizona. The desert sky is largely free of clouds, pollution, and humidity, enhancing visibility during the day and allowing for a rare and magical connection to the cosmos at night.

Arizona is celebrated for its dark skies and the resort has strived to protect this precious resource with careful placement of efficient lighting. Reducing light pollution slashes energy costs and carbon footprints, improves guest experiences, and minimizes the impacts to ecosystems.

Imagine not just a smattering of stars but a sky so laden it can barely contain them all. A crescendo of stars emerges from the blackness like splintered diamonds. Planets appear, comets blaze across the sky, and wonder of wonders—the long, arched streak of the Milky Way stretches overhead. Eighty percent of Americans can’t see the Milky Way from where they live. Yet it hovers above the desert, a river of frosted light.

The night also offers a perfect opportunity for a therapeutic soak in the natural hot springs. Follow the gently lighted path to the base of the cliffs where the pools of warm crystal-clear water are available 24 hours a day. It is a radiant and peaceful oasis. Soothed by water that’s rich in minerals, notably lithium, magnesium, and bicarbonates, the hot springs are refreshing, and healing at any time. But there’s just something magical about being there in the cool night air beneath a canopy of stars.

Sky View Cabins at the resort are designed for moments like this. They not only provide incredible panoramas of the lush grounds and surrounding mountains during the day. The cabins also offer an incomparable peek at the night sky. Set on an elevated foundation overlooking the resort property, these cabins are exquisitely appointed inside. And each Sky View Cabin also features a large platform deck for stargazing equipped with lounge seating and a private outdoor tub. It makes for a memorable perch to witness the nighttime pageantry.

Additionally, Castle Hot Springs hosts stargazing events each month. Seasoned astronomers armed with impressive telescopes lead tours of the night sky pointing out constellations and nebulae, planets and comets. This is the kind of memento you want to take home from any getaway. Not just an amazing memory, but knowledge that can be used again and again. Dates for stargazing events, along with some expected nighttime sightings, are listed on the resort website.

With so many activities available at Castle Hot Springs, it’s easy to fill the daylight hours with yoga, hiking, horseback riding, e-bike tours, massage, and on and on. What surprises many guests is just how vibrant the nightlife is in such a quiet place. Yet all you have to do to experience the drama is look up.

Look up at the Arizona stars and savor a show unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s nighttime at Castle Hot Springs.
