Sustainability & Farming

Sustainability & Farming

Sustainability is the core of the farm. It is an essential part in preserving the thriving ecology that makes up our resort and the surrounding Sonoran Desert. Soil preservation, biodiversity, and localized food systems play a vital role in our planet’s overall health for future generations to come. One of the main objectives here at Castle Hot Springs is to create a closed loop system, resulting in a more resilient, self sufficient farm that is in tune with the earth’s natural cycles.

The foundation of the farm is healthy soil. Through minimal tillage, crop rotation, and the constant application of organic matter, such as compost, we are able to promote the highest quality soil possible. That soil contains a myriad of life forms such as protozoa, funghi, and beneficials microorganism, all of which promote vigorous plant growth.

In turn, the fertile soil allows the team to grow an incredibly diverse range of plants. On the farm you’ll notice regional perennials and fruiting annuals, alongside citrus trees and edible flowers. All of these plants work together to promote pollinators and beneficial insects, which ward off pests and help maintain a balance within our system. At the same time, some species that are planted help fix the nitrogen in the soil, while others are planted densely to create a microclimate and reduce water consumption.

Once the crops are ready for harvest, they travel no more than a couple hundred yards and  are delivered straight to the kitchen. This reduces fuel intake and our overall carbon footprint. In no time, these fresh fruits and vegetables are on your plate, resulting in the most nutrient rich delicious tasting meals possible.
